Dr. Moon and the Keplerian Atom
This film project explores the life and work of nuclear pioneer and Manhattan Project scientist Robert J. Moon. A professor at the University of Chicago for more than fifty years, Moon helped develop early particle accelerators and contributed to experiments leading to Chicago Pile-1, the world’s first controlled nuclear chain reaction.
Yet despite his role in the birth of the atomic age, Moon’s work has largely disappeared from historical accounts. This documentary investigates his scientific contributions—from cyclotron research and nuclear instrumentation to his later geometric model of the atomic nucleus—through archival research, interviews, and newly uncovered documents.

The story
This documentary began as a simple question: how can a scientist involved in some of the most important developments of early nuclear science become nearly forgotten by history?
While researching Robert J. Moon’s work, I began uncovering a network of archival materials, declassified government records, and interviews with people who knew and worked with him. Moon’s career intersected with major events in twentieth-century science, including the development of the University of Chicago cyclotron and research leading to Chicago Pile-1.
The investigation also follows a surprising historical thread. In 1986, federal authorities raided the offices of the Fusion Energy Foundation, a scientific organization where Moon’s collaborators were publishing and developing aspects of his later work. Materials preserved from that period—including documents, research notes, and correspondence—may contain important records related to Moon’s ideas.

Through archival footage, historical photographs, patent diagrams, and animated scientific visualizations, the film reconstructs Moon’s scientific career and explores his final theory: a geometric model of the atomic nucleus that attempts to reorganize the periodic table through geometric structure and largely forgotten electrodynamics.
